KORTRIJK STATION AREA

KORTRIJK, 2002

For the restructuring of the inner ring road of Kortrijk - a street with a length of 5 kilometer - Maxwan was invited to study the traffic conditions and public space of the road and adjacent areas. In a second phase Maxwan worked out one specific area along the city ring, the Station Area. In the direct surroundings of the station are two large plots, presently used as insignificant parking areas. On these two sites Maxwan studied combinations of use and furnishing (in close collaboration with BBN, advisors for project realization). In the design of the Northern site, Conservatoriumplein, a half-sunken and naturally ventilated parking garage, provides the base for a pop concert hall, and three mixed-use office and housing towers. The southern site, Tack-location, will become a business and retail centre with a parking area on its roof, including a hotel and two apartment buildings above.
