5 VILLAS
LEEUWARDEN, 2002
The aim of this design was an extraordinary pleasant living environment for all individual families and for the group of 5 together: A luxury private villa in the woods was combined with the advantages of living in close approximation with ones neighbours. While the central yard is designed for various collective activities such as playfield for children, as soon as one steps into the house only the woods will be experienced and a high degree of privacy guaranteed. Due to the extraordinary location within the woods, a lot of attention has been given to the transition of inside and outside spaces. Once approaching the group on a narrow lane the facade surrounding the collective yard at three sides will be experienced as one. Transparent and semi transparent materials are chosen to give an impression of spatial richness. Behind the facade, patios are visible and here and there one can catch a glimpse of the woods behind. Five entrance doors are marked with columns that light up in the night. The group of houses is designed in such a way, that one can clearly speak of one design. Still each house is worked out differently. Many lay-outs are possible: A house for a family of seven or together with grandparents, a house with an office or a practice attached an atelier house - infinitely the users define their own living environment.
