KITCHEN
ROTTERDAM, 1996
The owners of an old radar tower - that was refurbished as a house with low standards - claimed for luxury. The commission: facelift of kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom. The existing house must be one of the most beautifully situated in Rotterdam. Therefore Maxwan had to decide not to make another room with a serial of cupboards attached to the walls - as in a conventional kitchen - but to 'open up' as much as possible. Walls were knocked down, exposing a 1.20 m high cliff between former living room and former garage. The kitchen was built as one single piece of furniture, lying to balance on the edge of the cliff. Being kept clear from the surrounding walls, every piece of the kitchen has access from both sides.
