REALITY MACHINES

ROTTERDAM, 2003

Maxwan was asked to design the travelling exhibition "Reality Machines" - an overview of recent Dutch architecture, graphic design, fashion, product design and photography - for the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAi) in Rotterdam. The design converted the main exhibition hall into a bright, open showroom wherein bases, walls and showcases are avoided.
The 120 exhibits hang from the edge of a lowered ceiling on a rail conveyer (the type used in high-tech assembly halls). The rail moves, has the shape of a huge E and travels at the pace of a couple meters per minute, creating a slow parade of items across the hall and along the long window facing the museum-park. One could sit either inside or outside the gallery and watch the whole show pass by in an hour, or one could walk around and be surprised by the continuously changing arrangement and the unexpected combination of objects.
