PANAAN

AMSTERDAM, 2006

The Oostenburgereiland in Amsterdam used to be the centre of the city's ship building activity first and heavy machine making second. Currently, it is transforming into an urban area with mixed office and workspaces facilities. An important ambition of the Maxwan master plan for the redevelopment of the area is to keep streets free of parked cars.
We then designed a 2 layer parking deck with 180 parking places which took the form of a slightly curving object ca 220 m long and 11 m wide, with well designed ramps at both ends. In addition, the adjoining public square is designed in strong relation to this object. Inspired by the spatial openness of the area we balanced a small amount of single interventions to create a pleasant public space: a number of softly sloping mounds, few adult trees and a light sculpture made out of ordinary street lights.
